Abstract The move to migrate to all IP based networks resulted in then formulation of Mobile IP to provide IP mobility support to the mobile terminals, to minimize the large signalling delays involved in Mobile IP mobility agent based micro mobility protocols were proposed. This paper performs an analysis of the effect of the mobility agent within access networks on the capacity and congestion in the access network. Using Maximum Concurrent Flow problem we define the problem and solve it algorithmically to identify the throughput with and without the mobility agent. From the results it can be concluded that by implementing local mobility solutions based on mobility agents the network capacity will be reduced.
